![]() Class EvaluationThe midterm and final examinations are a combination of multiple choice and written questions. If you miss the midterm exam you must give the instructor a medical excuse form within two working days or you will be assigned a zero for the exam (see the University Calendar for information on what constitutes an acceptable excuse for missing an exam). The weight of a missed exam will be reallocated to the final exam. The final exam is cumulative. If you miss the final exam and are granted a deferral by your Faculty, you will write the final exam on 23 June 2003 at 2 PM, room BSP-241. Assignment 1 will give students experience with using the library database systems for the purposes of finding journal articles. Assignment 2 will test scientific methodology and writing skills; it is a scientific paper style report on an observational study using a software program (Sniffy Pro Demo version) that simulates a white rat in a cage. Each assignment must be turned in to the instructor in class on the day it is due. For every day an assignment is late (including weekends), 10% will be deducted. Assignment details will be provided on the course web site.
Schedule
Grade Allocation
Exam marks will be tallied at the end of the course and converted to the 9-point University grade scale. Appealing Grades on the Exams and Assignment If you feel that you have been incorrectly graded on a question from an exam or on some aspect of an assignment you may appeal the mark by justifying why your grade should be changed. This involves explaining and supporting why your work deserves a higher mark. Simply stating that a higher grade is deserved is insufficient; you must offer evidence to justify your position. I recommend that you take a little time after receiving your exam or assignment to consider your answer and to muster your arguments. The actual procedure is slightly different for the various assignments. In all cases, however, you must include your name and student ID number on the answer justification. For a multiple choice question, on a piece of paper indicate which question you are appealing, what answer you gave, and explain why your answer is correct. For a written question, photocopy the question and original answer and staple the photocopy to a piece of paper with the explaining of why your answer deserves a higher mark. For the assignment, turn in a copy of your assignment with the relevant section(s) that supports your argument that your grade should be adjusted highlighted; write your justification on a separate piece of paper and staple it to your assignment. To be considered, answer justifications must be submitted to the instructor within two weeks of the midterm, quiz, or assignment being made available to the student. All answer justifications will be reviewed and considered by the instructor at the end of the course.
