Go to the University of Alberta library web site (http://www.library.ualberta.ca/). Once there, select the "Databases" link from the top yellow menu bar. From here, using the search or arrangement by alphabet functions you can gain access to the PsycINFO and Web of Science databases.
When asked to provide citations of articles you must use the appropriate American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style. Information on the APA style can be found on-line at http://www.apastyle.org/previoustips.html and http://www.apastyle.org/faqs.html. The U of A library website also has some examples of turning database information into appropriate APA citations; go to: http://www.library.ualberta.ca/guides/apa/index.cfm.
Use the PsycINFO database listed as "1998 to..." for questions 1-15; do not use the "1887 to..." database. Once you are in the "1998 to..." section of the database leave the date boxes at their default positions of "From: 1872" and "To: 2002".
1. How many listings does PsycINFO have for the keyword "classical conditioning" for the "1998 to..." database? Note: make sure the "Map term to subject heading" box does not have a checkmark in it.
2. What is the full APA citation of the 1998 article published by Michael R. Snyder?
3. Drs. C.D. Heth and M.L. Spetch are both professors in the psychology department. What is the full APA citation of an article they published together (note: there is an additional author on the article).
4. What is the library call number for the above journal article and which U of A library is the journal housed in?
5. If you search PsycINFO for the term "honeybee", how many subject headings is the term mapped onto? Note: make sure that the "Map term to subject heading" box does have a checkmark in it.
6. In her Behavioral Ecology & Sociobiology article, what measure/criteria did Ulrika Candolin use to determine the parental ability of male stickleback fish?
7. What is the title of another article that Candolin has published on stickleback behaviour?

11. Use the "journal" command to search for the Journal of Comparative Psychology. Select the journal from the list of journal titles and perform the search. How many articles are cited in PsycINFO for the Journal of Comparative Psychology?
12. Run a general subject heading search for "rats" (click the checkbox for "RATS" but not "NORWAY RATS" on the next screen). How many citations does PsycINFO list for rats?
13. There are too many articles on rats read through; we need to reduce this number. Using the combine function, how many Journal of Comparative Psychology articles deal with rats?
14. Use the limit function (i.e., the arrow and bullseye icon) to reduce the list even further. Select the Learning & Motivation topic from the Classification Codes option. Give the full APA citation of the first article produced by this limited search.
15. Find the article published by the first author (i.e., the author listed first in the citation) of the article in question 14, just before the article you've listed above (i.e., the next oldest article the first authors published). Provide the full APA citation.
Use the Web of Science database for questions 16-22. Use the menu box on the ISI Web of Knowledge page to select the Web of Science database. Use the "Easy Search" function for all of the following questions.
16. Search for the topic "honeybee navigation" in the Science Citation Index Expanded database (i.e., remove the checkmarks from the Social Science Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index options). How many references are provided?
17. Find the article written by Menzel, Brandt, and Gumbert (2000) in the above list. How many times has this article been cited since it has come out?
18. What is the full citation of a 2001 article written by somebody other than Menzel that cites the Menzel et al. (2000) article?
19. How many citations are listed in the above article's reference list?
20. Find the Wehner (1981) article in the reference list and take the link. What genus of animal is Wehner reporting on in this article?
21. M.L. Spetch has cited Wehner's (1981) article. What species of animal is Spetch working with and what is the full APA citation for this article?
22. To bring the web of connections back to our initial search term, what is the full APA citation of an article studying honeybee navigation that cites Spetch et al. (1992). (Hint: look in the "times cited" link to see who has cited Spetch.)
