Can the results be generalized beyond the context of the study?

Psych 208 Discussion Board: Can the results be generalized beyond the context of the study?

By Digdon on Wednesday, March 18, 1998 - 05:01 pm:

Suppose a researcher tried to replicate this study in Canada. Do you think they would get similar results? Why or why not?

Would the results be the same or different when doing the research in Canada? We don't know. They might be because Sweden and Canada are similar with government and family. But would they be the same if the research was done in another country? A Country with a different government and different beliefs. In other countries, parents might not have so much time to spend with their children or the children spent most of their time with nannys or such. We can't overgeneralize it because lots of countries are different: have different ideas of teaching, different governments, and different beliefs.

If a researcher were to replicate this study in Canada, I feel they would get different results because culture plays a big factor. The two cultures are different, each has different values.
For example in Japan, they adopt hard work and obedience toward school at a young age. One way of teaching may be the same in one country and different in another.

Doing the study in Canada would be more representative of other countries than Sweden is. This is b/c we are a country of immigrants and such cultural differences and belief systems that guide our everyday life are represented within Canada. Hopefully when replication in Canada occurs, a broad range of cultures would be represented. I don't believe that the results would be the same in Canada and Sweden, but Canada would be a better representation of the population than Sweden. In sweden, day-care is higly regarded and thus high quality day care might be a result. This might not be the case in Canada. Therefore the reuslts would differ.

If this experiment was done in canada I think the results would be very similar because the cultures and ideas and gov,t are very similar. Of course, there are many other factors to consider that are diff in the the two countries and that could affect the results. However the results would prob. be more similar in cnd then if they were done somewhere like japan.

I believe the results would be quite similar. Our cultures aren't really that different, although I'm not sure at all about the differences in the qualities of day care. Overall, if they used the same measures and controls, they would likely be similar.

I think the context of the study can not be generalized in a country like Canada. How can we compare the social structure of Sweden's daycare to ours. Especially since our government is cutting the benefits of our daycare system.Sweden has one of the best Daycare systems around the world. If the study was done in Canada first and then maybe the results could be generalized to countries like the U.S.

Good point, though, Cindy. Very insightful. the different cultures within canada could pose a difference, but I still feel that results would be similar.

Yes and no, social economic conditions are similair and both populations are a similair European based culture for the most, but Canada I would think has more cultural difference within areas and moreso in outer areas. Also, I think the social atittude is not as strong in Canada. I don't think it would be wise to generalize, but it would serve to base other studies on the Canadian population.
