Ask Siggy...

intro.psych (Psyco 105) Discussion: Group 3 Discussion Group: Therapy: Sites to Visit: Ask Siggy...
By Patricia on Wednesday, October 14, 1998 - 03:32 pm:

Ask Siggy is a question and answer site managed by an interdisciplinary group of therapists. Choose a response from the list. What do you think of the professional's advice? Would you propose anything different? What orientation do you think the professional follows? How does this affect the advice they give? (Be sure to identify the question on which you are commenting in the discussion group).

A woman wrote in and expressed her distress at the fact that she wants children and her husband does not. The professional reccomended couple therapy and/or individual therapy to explore this conflict. The woman felt that her husband may not want to have children because his own childhood was negative. The professional's response to this was that the husband would have to explore this on his own. The woman also stated that she was ready to have an affair to become pregnant, however the professional warned against this and suggested she look closely at why she wanted children so desperately.

I think the professional follows a psychodynamic approach. Basically, he is telling the woman that she and her husband need insight into their different viewpoints. I think a humanistic approach would work well with the husband who seems to have a extremely negative attitude regarding children - he might be brought out more if given 'unconditional positive regard.'

I have submitted my own question, therefore I'm going to wait for that response before answering the other questions. Hopefully I will be able to get through this evening.

I first looked at the attetion deficit question, "I'm sure I have it how do I get tested". Are these real questions thet they have recieved? I don't think that the people with attention deficit very often self diagnose. The response was very technical into what tests are used, and what they test. I 'm not sure why but I was looking for something else. Maybe some symptoms to reaffirm that their diagnoses was correct.
I then looked at the question Jene looked at. This has nothing to do with this class but don't people talk about having kids before they get married? The advice was common sense, and more personable than the other question I read. That's all for now, who is summarizing?
