Psychology is the science of behaviour. It is important to review some of the methods psychologists use to study behaviour. Many humans believe that one aspect of our psychology that sets us apart from other animals is our intelligence. What does intelligence mean? How do we understand intelligence? This abstract symbol-based form of communication is a part of the human intellect. One way to understand an organism is to watch it develop over time. Developmental psychology is the scientific study of change. We exist in a social world. What is the nature of this social world? How do our relationships with others change over our lives? Are you a happy person? How does this influence how you interact with other people? Personality is the study of how individuals interact with the world and with each other. Most psychological processes are adaptive. What happens when these adaptive processes break down? Abnormal psychology is the study of maladaptive behaviours and processes. How can we diagnose and help people with mental disorders? Therapists use what we know about psychology to treat people with mental disorders. |
