Donald Heth

Welcome. I am a professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta. Web pages are pretty much de rigeur among professors, so I am just following the crowd by publishing this one. I've used it to draw together different facets of my professional life: you'll find links here to my research interests, the courses that I teach, and the textbook that I helped author. In addition, I've also added a link to a few of my personal interests as well.

I received my undergraduate education at New College in Sarasota, Florida. New College is now a part of the University of South Florida, but at that time it was an independent and private college founded to seek innovative approaches to higher education. It was small--some of my classes have had more students that my entire college--which provided great opportunities for seminar and tutorial instruction. I obtained my Ph.D. degree at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. It was definitely the most exciting intellectual time of my life. I taught for one year at the University of California, Riverside, which is located about half way between Los Angelese and Palm Springs. I then accepted a position at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The University of Alberta is Canada's second-largest English-speaking university. When I first came to the campus, it had just undergone a large expansion towards becoming a major research university. My department, the Department of Psychology, has seen a lot of growth and is one of the largest on campus in terms of student enrollments. I'm involved in the honours program and teach a fourth-year seminar to students in that program. I also teach an "internet enhanced" section of introductory psychology, which uses the internet to provide a more personalized approach to teaching a large section class. You can find more details on the page referenced to the left.

I last revised my web page in 1998; to make up for my tardiness in updating, I've included a lot of the newer technology in this site. It is optimized for "version 6" browsers; if you are using an earlier version, the formatting may look a bit odd. The site is pretty bandwidth heavy; I couldn't resist some of the bells and whistles now available.
