intro.psych (Psyco 105) Discussion: Group 3 Discussion Group: Methods: Sites to Visit: Lifestyle Questionnaire

Take this brief questionnaire as honestly as you can. What is your lifestyle? What advice are you given? Click the back button on your browser and answer the questions to obtain the highest score you can. How might bias in self-reporting affect the results of an experiment using a questionnaire like this one?

My lifestyle, according to the questionnaire, "could be better, but could be worse." Evidently, my health does not preoccupy me, but I could improve my lifestyle/health by looking at the sections of the questionnaire where I answered "almost never" or "sometimes."

Bias in self-reporting could affect the results of an experiment using a questionnaire like this one because respondents might choose answers that would give them a good report, rather than answer truthfully.

Right on about bias! I got pretty tired of clicking "almost never" or "sometimes"

This inventory could be improved by reversing some of the questions, such as changing "I like learning new things." to "I don't like learning new things." At least you have to think a bit before responding in a socially desirable way. But the drawback to negative questions is that you have to respond negatively to be positive.

I got a rating of wow, But there is always room for improvement. I think that if they had furthered the choices, by adding the extreme never and always the outcome would have been concrete. A Health fanatic or someone at high risk, for example.
Biasing could occur as with any survey or self-report by an individual answering untruthfully, or having an unrealistic self description.

Which discussion are we going to summarize? Who is going to do it? If you like, I'll summarize this week. Might it be helpful if we had each other's e-mail addresses? Mine is jreagle@junctionnet.com
Then we could decide on which topic to discuss, who is going to summarize, etc. I suggest one person pick the topic, another summarizes and we switch each week. Also, I think it would be a good idea if we decided on a deadline to discuss the question we choose, so we don't leave it to the last minute... That's enough rambling from me...
