Can the results be generalized beyone the context of the study?

intro.psych (Psyco 105) Discussion: Group 3 Discussion Group: Reading the Research-DID: Can the results be generalized beyone the context of the study?

In particular, can we learn anything about normal memory by studying memory in clinical populations? Why or why not?

This discussion is for marks.

One problem with using information from clinical studies to generalize to "normal" memory, as I already mentioned in a previous post, is that these patients suffer from a pre-existing brain disorder. How can we be sure what is due to the disorder and what is due to the hypothesis. This is especially true in disorders that we know little about like DID.

As the results of this research go, I would say yes, there is something we can learn about normal memory. Specifically, we can learn that conscious recall is personality dependent - if that makes any sense! I share Montresor's skepticism and agree that the study of "normal" memory should also extend to using subjects who do not have a clinical problem.

I don't understand what you mean Jene, "persoanlity specific"? I don't think that you can take very much for the normal memory using interpersonality amnesia research becaus we don't know the difference in memories. We don't know if a person without DID memory, even for one personality is the sam as some without DID. I hope that made sense.
