Are the conclusions important?

intro.psych (Psyco 105) Discussion: Group 3 Discussion Group: Reading the Research - Social Development: Are the conclusions important?
By Jene on Monday, October 12, 1998 - 04:18 pm:

I had a hard time understanding the discussion, so I will discuss what I think was important. First, it was significant that this particular study was conducted because there were not a lot of figures available outlining adolescent male dating preferences (prior to the study, figures were taken from marriage data, which contained little male adolescent data, and singles advertisements, which contained mostly adult data). So this was the first time adolescent data was collected specifically addressing dating preferences. This therefore makes the conclusions important.

Second, it is important that male adolescents prefer older females even though females prefer older males. It is not adaptive for males to prefer older females, yet they do, so some mechanism must be going on. This seems important to me.

There is no discussion, however, of the fact that in reality male adolescents are dating younger female adolescents. This finding should have been included in the conclusion. As it stands, it looks like this issue is being avoided.

That's all I understood, really...help!

I know this deadline was my idea, I forgot the article at home, and I'll be back to post the rest of my opinions later this evening. I apologize, but I'm really ill and need to sleep. more later

The results are important. If they weren't how could the research be important and why would it be published.
Important points
First study of adolescent, but they are being compared to adults, this shows the evolutionary change.(I'm a little confused about the singles and marriage info. that makes it universal)
Second the fact that why or the mechanisms of attraction have not been established. I wonder why the researchers chose this topic instead of that and why there is no research.
That is all I see right now i may come back to this tomorrow.

Regarding Jene's comments : If you look on page 1507 second column the authors state

"Given that older females are not interested in them, the most rewarding strategy for a teenage male would be to express an interest in younger females"
