Increase your I.Q.???

intro.psych (Psyco 105) Discussion: Group 3 Discussion Group: The Human Intellect: Increase your I.Q.???

Read over the claims of Braintainment
According to Arthur Jensen, speed of processing is important for intelligence. If you increase your speed of processing using THINKfast exercises, will this increase your I.Q.? Is it reasonable to expect increases of speed of processing on THINKfast exercises to generalize to other situations, such as Psyco 105 exams?

This is an interesting site and it is hard to make any hard statements unless one of us tries this thing :)

But I just want to make a few statements about it.

1. Nowhere on the site does it actually say "Increase IQ". It does say however that it will increase one of three types of IQ. The three types being Static, Fluid, and BrainQ. BrainQ (brain's processing speed and efficiency) is what this site "guarantees" will increase.
This is it in their words:

"Most importantly, of your 3 IQs, your brain's processing speed and efficiency is the easiest and quickest to improve, with the right type of brain exercise program like THINKfast."

2. This site can not be generalized to other students because speed of processing has nothing to do with studying, and knowing the material on a course exam.

3. The free test they give you tests your FLuid IQ. This is interesting because the type of IQ they claim to increase, with a small fee, has no test associated with it on the site. They say that the ONLY way to measure BrainQ is with "brain reflex challenges such as Thinkfast" hmmmmm.... seems a bit like an infomercial (Coincidentally enough the inventor of Thinkfast is Josh Reynolds who is also inventor of other infomercial products such as Mood Ring, EnergAire, and Thighmaster)

4. Many of the mental and physical attributes they list as being able to increase are characteristics that Attention Deficit Disorder people are low in. This site does not mention how Thinkfast helps people who may have chemical imbalances (i.e. whether it compliments drugs or replaces them)

5. The creator is not a Doctor. Although they say Doctors are on the board of the Company, it does not say how much they contributed.

Anyways that's my little spiel on this site!!!

Anyone still interested in purchasing it?? :-)

My first reaction to this site is CREEPY! I feel like I am being sold snake oil.

To answer the questions... Arthur Jensen's research suggested a moderate correlation between speed of information processing and IQ. He did not prove that it is possible to increase your speed of information processing and thereby increase your IQ.

If Thinkfast does indeed rev up your speed of processing, your IQ may increase, or you may have learned a different way of thinking that does not affect IQ.

Would Thinkfast help on a Psyco 105 exam? It depends on the type of exam, I would imagine. Multiple choice questions rely more on speed of processing than short answer or essay questions...or do they, I am not entirely sure...

Jene,
I think you've really hit the nail on the head. Just because you have a correlation (e.g., between IQ and speed of prcessing) doesn't mean they are causally related (e.g., then if you increase speed of processing you can increase IQ).

I'd have to agree with Jene, the site was pretty eerie. I think that if your speed of processing increased with the use of Thinkfast, it would only be with those specific exercises and would not effect your overall IQ.
The fact that the whole site is so commercialized would make me avoid it almost solely out of principle.
