Lifestyle Questionnaire

intro.psych (Psyco 105) Discussion: Group 2 Discussion Group: Methods: Sites to Visit: Lifestyle Questionnaire

Take this brief questionnaire as honestly as you can. What is your lifestyle? What advice are you given? Click the back button on your browser and answer the questions to obtain the highest score you can. How might bias in self-reporting affect the results of an experiment using a questionnaire like this one?

Well I did the questionaire and well at least was above 50! I'm not obessed with my health but I pay attention to key things. I should change a few things. Anyway I tried answering most of the time for all the questions and got 100. I think bias in self reporting can either give you a higher or lower score depending on your personality.

Hi well I'm not quite sure, but I think we should tlk more about one thing and then write a short summary. Anyway, did you think if anything you answered, by making your self seem better or worse than you really are?

By Angela on Tuesday, September 15, 1998 - 03:36 pm:

AHHH!! I wrote 2 messages already and the computer still won't accept them! ugh. I hope this one works. Anyways, I didn't know how to work the test, but after a few trys, I understood it. I think its a good web site, since it gives me an idea as to how correlations work, rather than just reading a book and knowing that they exist. This test gives you a "hand's on" approach to using correlations.
I'll write more later, because I don't want to type too much, and find out that it didn't send.

By Daki on Tuesday, September 15, 1998 - 09:08 pm:

Ahhh! I wrote the wrong message for this web page. Ugh, nothing is going right.
My email is
dk2@gpu.srv.ualberta.ca
as for this web page, I thought it was a real good questionaire to take since it asks questions that you usually do not ask yourself (well, atleast for me anyways). For example, I didn't realize how much meat I was eating per week, as well as how stressed I am. However, I have one problem with the questionaire. I think that its not fair to have only 3 choices for you answers. The least that it could have given was 5 (inluding statements such as "never" rather than "almost never"). The reason why I think this, is that it wouldn't be fair to be placed in the same category (or rated the same) as a person who, say, has sex once in awhile, whereas I am celibate (or vise versa!). As well, questions such as sleeping patterns are very subjective due to the fact that its kind of hard to tell whether or not how much time passes when your lying in bed. As well, if a person has had a rough and tiring week, then that person has a greater chance of sleeping more quickly than with a person who's had a stressful weekend and is too worried to sleep. Furthermore, if you have a low self esteem, then you would tend to be more critical of yourself, you might answer "almost never" to the question: "I have the motivation to realize my plans." Conversely, it would be the opposite if you were very egotistical, and self-centred.

Btw, my email is dk2@gpu.srv.ualberta.ca if you guys need to get a hold of me...in fact, here's my phone number...and if eny of you should read this before 12:00am tonight, please phone me so I can discuss who and what web page we're gonna do a summary on. If no one phones, then I'll just do my own. thanks. Daki ;)

By Rubina on Tuesday, September 15, 1998 - 09:50 pm:

You never sleft your phone number. I m sorry that I couldn't write earlier, ctually I am in regina at the moment my grandmother is very sick and she is in the hospital so I flew down here tonight, the flights look really sold out for tomorrow morning my dad is trying to figure that out, because I have 5 classes tomorrow so I don't know if I can miss them or not. I will try my best to to come tomorrow to class, but I might not make it. I will quickly tell you what I think about this experiment and if someone else in the group can write the sumaary for all of us and we can discuss it that would be great I would really appreciate it, because I am going to the hospital to visit my grandmother again. I think my lifestyle is o.k. other than the fact that i don't exercise and watch what I eat. I am nort the type of person that is obssessed with the way I eat, I have to go I will try my best to write tomoorow morning, my parents are leaving for the hospital. I would greatly apprecite it if omeone else can write it. and next time I will. Thanks
Sorry for the inconvienience

Don't worry about it Rubina, I emailed Angela (why do both your names end in a "a"? ugh...very confusing...anyways) and we decided that I would do it...and don't worry about it...I'm sure our Prof will understand. As for the questionnaire....the more and more I take it, I find that it isn't a very well written (or thought out) questionnaire. Take for example the first question: "I feel good about what I do (studies, job, being a full-time mother/father)"
I don't know about you guys, but that is about as general a question as you could possibly ask (it even beats out the question "how are you?"). If it isn't clear to you yet, the reason why I think its such a poor question to ask (especially if its used in an experiment), is the fact that your supposed to judge your life as a whole, and make a crude assessment of it.
I think its pretty easy to get a 100% or even 0%, as long as you choose the very obvious right (or wrong) answer. It kind of reminds me of my cousin's "seventeen" and "Ym" magazines, where they had those quizes: "is He right for you?" or "how do you know when your boyfriend is cheating on you?". The same type questions (although slightly more thought out) are found in this questionnaire, where, unless your answering with no bias at all (which is pretty much impossible unless your Data or Spock, and you know how many of those in the world there are), then the questionnaire won't be able to give you a true sence of what your lifestyle is.
That's just my thoughts...I'll write the summary....after one more time of writing the questionnaire...I seem to get varied answers each time I take it...weird.

By Daki on Wednesday, September 16, 1998 - 01:52 am:

Hmm....one thing that I noticed that the "lifestyle" questionnaire didn't cover the whole "lifestyle" of a person. In fact, it only concentrated on the physical and mental aspects of a person. In my opinion I think that the spiritual aspectr is just as important if not more so than the others. Whether your agnostic, or Christian, or Islam, its a part of who you are. Whether you pray or go to church, or contemplate the existance of a God (or God's), is important in the understanding of who we are and what lifestlyle we live.
Also noticed that the advice at the end is so primitive, I'd expect that kind of answer from an elementary Kid. for example, when I purposely scored a 0%, they suggested that "Your lifestyle and health-related behavior could use some major changes." Ugh...could they be anymore helpful?
yeesh. And their choice of remedy? "start by working on the aspects of your lifestyle which you answered ''almost never'' or ''sometimes''". Just a s helpful.
(if this is long..sorry..its 1:50 in the morning, and I'm waitinf for a friend to call....not much else to do...but it is fun...I guess ;)
Another thing is that I noticed that neither the age nor sex of a person has any bearing on the questionnaire...I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing...if a 12 year old takes this questionnaire, I'm sure he'd score well....atleast I'd hope he would for the drugs/sex/smoking questions ;)
Just food for thought...I think I'll write the summary now...although I feel like i've already written 3 ....

Just one thing about the spiritual aspect.. How would you integrate that? I know some studies say that religious people are happpier than non religious types, but really doesn't iit depend on who you are anyway. I know unhappy religious people and I know very happy religious people. So do you give a hogher score to some one who prays lots? If there so dependent on their god is there something wrong with their life?

You guys seem really comfortable in your discussion group already. That's great. You all contributed a lot. Unfortunately, you only included some of these great perceptions in your summary. For the next time - make sure you include points from all group members and directly address the questions. Also, for the next summary just post it as a message like you did your comments. Remember, you are marked on 10 out of 11 summaries so you can forego a mark if you're not happy with it. Grade 1+
