Can the results be generalized beyond the context of the study?

intro.psych (Psyco 105) Discussion: Group 2 Discussion Group: Reading the Research - Social Development: Can the results be generalized beyond the context of the study?
By Daki on Wednesday, October 14, 1998 - 12:01 am:

As stated previously, there is no way that this study could generalize beyond the context of which the study was taken, since each person, each place, is different, and would therefore not hold true for other places.

Is the design appropriate for the research question? Your discussion on this question was great! Really involved. Super insights. Issues such as experimenter expectations, media focus and the constraints of the age ranges the experimenters asked about showed you really put your thinking caps on. However, a lot of these issues are measurement concerns not design concerns.

Are the measures appropriate for the research questions? The design of the study is correlational. A lot of what you discussed above were measurement issues.

Can the results be used to answer the research questions?
The issues you brought up are real limitations. Culture and sample size will limit the usefulness of the results. This is closely tied to the next question.

Can the results be generalized to a context outside of the study? Again, the issues you mentioned above limit generalizability.

Overall, great job. You really made an effort to decipher the issues.

Grade = 3

re-mark on last question -Are the conclusions important?

You brought up two good points
- marriage patterns and single ads are not necessarily valid measures of what adults preferences are
- sociological influences can explain some of these findings too

Re-mark = 3+
