intro.psych (Psyco 105) Discussion: Group 2 Discussion Group: Social Cognition:Sites to Visit: Locus of Control - Attributional Style

Take this assessment of attributional style.
How is attributional style related to self-concept? Do you think attributional style can be changed? Would changing your attributional style alter your self-concept?

Hmm....this is the 2nd questionnaire that I've seen from the "queendom" website...not to say that's a bad thing or anything. I tried the questionnaire, and I found the results a little difficult to understand. Unlike the previous questionnaires, this particular summary had more than just one evaluation....in fact, I think there were 5! what's weird is how this questionnaire is able to determine so much on just 40 questions. Mind you, there were some questions I didn't even understand...for example, I had no idea as to what this question was asking:
"I can complain about politics, but that's about all I can do." does it mean, your just a whiner and not a "Doer?" I don't know...

I think that this does reflect your self concept a lot. If you beleive that you're perfect and that any thing bad that happens to you is because of external forces you have a high self concept. If you blame yourself for all things that happen to you, like getting hit by a car then you have low self concept.
I think people who beleive strongly that only external forces eeffect things that happen to you then you probally feel you can't change your style and thase who feel they have complete control probally do.
I howver feel that I wouldn't want to change my style. I'm right near the middle. I understand tat I can control my own actions but not others. Yes at times I have lower self concept than at other times, but I feel I'm just generally more realistic about things. Is it the serenity prayer that talks about haing wisdom to know what you can't change?
If you change your style then probaly your self concept would change.

David the question is basically that if feel that you can do more than just complain then you have a higher internal style.

I also wanted to note that the advice given on the page says that you should tke a more control to help your self concept. I think ,it depends on what your like in the first place.

hello I am writing my summary right now.

I personally think that attributional style and self-concept inter-relate in the sense that the way you think evolves from what surrounds you and the situations that you are in. Certain people would see a situation in one way because of their upbringing or past experiences, whiles others faced with the same scenerio would see that situation in a different perspective such as the environment and present surroundings. I believe that attributional style can be changed if one really tries hard to change it. Nothing is stone written, so if one wishes to change their attributional style, either through change of environment or alterations in their views or perspectives, one may be able to do so.Surely, after altering your attributional style one would assume a change in self concept since the ways of thinking have been altered through a factor (external/internal) and eventually changing the forces that initially had contributed to that persons attributional style.

Rubina,

Your summary addresses the questions directly. However, it doesn't incorporate anything in the discussion and you didn't contribute to the discussion. This is the main purpose of the discussion groups. Even if you decide to submit your own summary you must participate in the discussion. Contact me if you want to discuss this further.
