Can the results be generalized beyond the context of the study?

intro.psych (Psyco 105) Discussion: Group 1 Discussion Group: Reading the Research - Social Development: Can the results be generalized beyond the context of the study?

I have got to say no. I don't the data is broad enough to generalize to the whole population. Maybe for the entire city, but not any further. It is to limited to be representative of the whole population.

Is the design appropriate for the research question? Indepth and lively discussion on this question. Questions about the presence of an interviewer and the sample size were insightful but are more related to the next question.

Are the measures appropriate for this research questions? Not as detailed as first question but I realize for this study these two questions are closely related. The issue of adolescents and adults having different definitions for terms like "dating" and "girlfriend" was an interesting and valid observation.

Can the results be used to answer the research questions? You are correct in that a limited sample (related to both size and representativeness) can constrain the usefulness of the results but you are also correct that the results do address the original research questions. The data does address the research questions. The other issues refer to the next question about generalizability.

Can the results be generalized beyond the context of the study?
Pretty skimpy on this question.

Overall, good job and some interesting and important points brought up.

Grade = 2+

Re-mark on the last question- Are the conclusions important?

You brought up two good points.
- theory discussion weakly tied to research results
- sample size not large or broad enough to make important conclusions

Re-mark = 3
