Is the research important?

intro.psych (Psyco 105) Discussion: Group 1 Discussion Group: Reading the Research - Social Development: Is the research important?
By Mike on Saturday, October 10, 1998 - 04:18 pm:

Hi I think the research is important to understand the way society works and if it conflicts with our natural preferences. It is also important because now we will be able to determine whether teenagers agree with the dating preferences of adults.

I think that it is useful in looking at reasons fo human sexual preferences and how these preferences evolve and change as people mature and their biological needs change. For example, a teenage boy may find older girls attractive because they possess more of the features necessary for reproduction. However, older men prefer younger women because they posess more of these same types of features than women the same age. Women's chances of having healthy children diminishes with age and they give off visual signals of this. Examples of this might be change in body shape, colour of skin, texture of skin, condition of teeth etc. I found it very interesting to visit the suggested site and read about homosexual mate preferences. According to the on-line survey, homosexual men only prefered youth at a rating of 6 out of 10. This makes sense since there would be no reproducing involved. I think that heterosexual men would rate this preference much higher. I also found it interesting that lesbian women still saught after money as do heterosexual women. This also makes sense since it has nothing to do with biological needs but rather security.

Well I agree with Ivanka about how, a younger male would prefer, an older female. I think this research could be very interesting for someone who is interested in the topic. I personally think it is interesting Therefore, I may choose to look more into the topic, but really what importance does this research have on our lives, and what will it do to improve our lives. I can't see where that comes into play.

SUMMARY - This research is useful in comparing the cultural and evolutionary views of dating preferences in society today. The research can help us to understand how these preferences evolve and change over time and if they conflict with what was previously thought to be a more "natural" mate selection choice. It gives us a practical look at some real case studies and allows us to compare the preferences of adoloescents and adults. Considering that a great number of people today are gay, it might have given us a better perspective if a section of the study focused on gay mate decision making.
