Primary and Secondary Qualities

• Primary

  • Inseparable from an object and simply perceived by senses (e.g., solidity)

• Secondary

  • Produced by the perceiver of an object, so not an aspect of the object itself (e.g., colour, sound)

• Simple ideas combine to form complex ones
