Bolles & Moot (1973)
Four factors control activity in rats:
- 24 hr periodicity
- Anticipation of regular meal time
- Illumination condition
- Deprivation state
Design:
- Ad-lib feeding; scheduled; ad-lib; deprivation
Results:
- All rats anticipate meals
- Controlled by temporal stimuli
- Light-fed do not run in dark
- Took a few days to learn timing
Edmonds & Adler (1977)
Feeding on 24 and 25 hr schedules
Design:
- Constant light level
- Two meals (24 & 25 hr intervals)
Results:
- Anticipation of feeding
- Feedings not signals for night running
- Subjective night, subjective day
